The first great explosion of language development occurs naturally during the preschool years. Children with dyslexia, along with all other children, learn thousands of words, master increasingly complex grammar, and develop remarkable listening comprehension—not because someone explicitly teaches every word or every grammatical rule, but because they are immersed in spoken language. Human beings are biologically designed to learn language through meaningful communication. The process is largely implicit rather than explicit; children learn language by using language.
A second explosion in language development begins when children gain fluent access to print.
Once reading becomes rapid and effortless, books become an extension of conversation. Children begin encountering words, ideas, sentence structures, and concepts that seldom occur in everyday speech. They discover history, science, fantasy, biographies, current events, and countless other subjects. They meet authors from different cultures and different centuries. They encounter sophisticated vocabulary repeatedly in meaningful contexts, allowing words to become part of their own language without anyone explicitly teaching them.
This second wave of language development is extraordinarily powerful because it is self-directed. Children read because they are curious. They read because they enjoy stories. They read to answer questions. They read to learn how things work. Every page introduces new vocabulary, new concepts, and new ways of thinking. Print becomes their playground—a place where language can be explored freely and endlessly.
Teachers certainly continue to teach vocabulary and language arts, but no teacher could ever explicitly teach the enormous number of words, ideas, and language experiences that fluent readers encounter throughout childhood. The overwhelming majority of vocabulary growth, background knowledge, and language sophistication develops through repeated exposure to language itself.
For students with dyslexia, the second wave of language development is interrupted—not because they cannot learn language, but because they cannot access print with the speed and automaticity needed for immersion.
Their difficulty is not in learning language. It is in accessing the printed language that fuels this second explosion of vocabulary and knowledge. When every page requires slow, effortful decoding, the amount of language they experience through print is dramatically reduced. They may spend twenty minutes trying to read what a classmate reads in five, missing out on the discussion, questions, and new learning that follow. They may avoid reading altogether because it is exhausting. While their classmates are immersed in thousands of additional words and ideas each week, students with dyslexia are often engaged in the perceptual work of sounding out words rather than thinking about what those words mean.
The result is not merely slower reading. It is reduced exposure to language itself.
This distinction is critical. Students with dyslexia do not primarily need explicit instruction in vocabulary, syntax, or general knowledge. They acquire spoken language in much the same way as everyone else and, given access to language, they continue learning vocabulary and concepts naturally. What they need explicit instruction for is learning the written code—how to decode and spell words.
Science-based reading instruction, such as structured literacy, is designed to teach the written code explicitly because, unlike spoken language, the written code is not acquired naturally by students with dyslexia. This instruction enables students with dyslexia to become more accurate readers and to make meaningful gains in reading fluency. However, for students with dyslexia, visual reading continues to be slower and effortful into adulthood (Sally Shaywitz). Although explicit instruction improves their ability to access print visually, it does not provide the rapid, automatic access to print that drives the second great wave of language development.
This is where appropriate accommodations become essential. As students continue developing their visual reading skills through explicit reading instruction, accommodations such as reading-by-listening remove the remaining barrier to language. Together, science-based reading instruction and appropriate accommodations allow students to become the strongest visual readers they can be while also giving them full access to the rich language experiences through which vocabulary, background knowledge, comprehension, and wisdom naturally grow.
No amount of direct vocabulary instruction can replace the countless hours of language immersion that occur when children have unrestricted access to books. The goal, therefore, is twofold: to provide explicit instruction that helps students become the strongest visual readers they can be, and at the same time to ensure continuous access to rich language through reading-by-listening. When both goals are pursued together, students with dyslexia can continue building vocabulary, background knowledge, comprehension, and wisdom alongside their peers.
